Zalec is a town of approximately 20 thousand inhabitants, in central Slovenia. So far that’s nothing new – Over there though, they know really well what their strength is: beer.
The region Zalec belongs to is, in fact, known as the “Valley of the Green Gold” precisely because hop farming, the fundamental ingredient of this drink, is dominant. The mayor of the town and the local businessmen have nonetheless gone beyond: a few days ago a public fountain pouring out beer instead of water was inaugurated!!!
A true monument to the local drink, that works in a very easy way – After buying in the town a beer mug with a microchip (which costs 6 euros) the mug can be filled with different types of beer available at the fountain, for a maximum of 5 times.
The microchip, on sale only for those of age, and the filling limit make such initiative totally safe, according to those who inspired the project. “We will not allow people to get drunk, we only wish to promote the culture of responsibly drinking beer”, declared Janko Kos, mayor of Zalec.
In this case, beer is a classic tourist souvenir and once you’ve reached the maximum quantity allowed, you get to keep the mug as well.
Who knows if, really, thanks to this unique fountain in the world, there will be a rise in the number of visitors to Zalec?
